PRSA HAWAI‘I HONORS BEST PUBLIC RELATIONS WORK AT 28TH ANNUAL KOA ANVIL AWARDS

HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I - On Thursday, July 28, the Hawai‘i Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored the best public relations campaigns and tactics of 2010, and recognized three outstanding professionals at its 28th Annual Koa Anvil Awards dinner at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club. The awards banquet, emceed by Hawaii News Now Sunrise anchors Steve Uyehara and Taizo Braden, was attended by more than 200 communications professionals from across the state.

"The Koa Anvil Awards recognizes excellence in our industry," said PRSA Hawaii President Moani Wright-Van Alst. "We continue to be inspired by the caliber of work produced by Hawaii's public relations professionals each year. We congratulate all the winners and honorees of the 28th Annual Koa Anvil Awards."

A total of 71 entries received awards in two main categories:

• Koa Anvil Awards - Complete public relations programs incorporating sound research, planning, execution and evaluation
• Koa Hammer Awards - Outstanding public relations tactics that are part of a communications campaign, including research and writing

There were 24 winners in the Anvil (campaigns) category and 47 in the Hammer (tactics) category. Receiving the highest Anvil score and garnering the coveted "Best of Show" award was Jackie Jaques-Smythe of Smythe & Associates for Shriners Hospitals for Children's reputation/brand management campaign.

McNeil Wilson Communications/Anthology Marketing Group collected the most awards with a total of 12. Other top winners included Bennet Group Strategic Communications (10), Pang Communications (6), Stryker Weiner & Yokota Public Relations, Inc. (6) and Castle Medical Center (6).

To order duplicate awards, please fill out the re-order form and submit per instructions by August 12, 2011.

Three individuals also were honored by the chapter for their contributions to the profession.

• The Gregg W. Perry Public Relations Professional of the Year award honors an exemplary practitioner who has made a major contribution to the profession. This year's award recipient is Duke Gonzales, APR, Corporate Communication Specialist at the U.S. Postal Service. With more than 25 years experience as a PR practitioner, Gonzales has been involved with PRSA Hawai‘i since 1997, including serving as its chapter president in 2004.

• The Hokupa‘a Award recognizes a relative newcomer to public relations for demonstrating exceptional leadership potential and achievement in his/her initial years in the profession. This year's recipient is Huy Vo, Senior Account Executive at Bright Light Marketing, who brings nearly five years of public relations experience. Vo specializes in public relations and marketing for festivals and events. He is currently the co-chair of the 2011 Koa Anvil Awards.

• The President's Leadership Award recognizes an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the success of the chapter and the profession. PRSA Hawai‘i Chapter President Moani Wright-Van Alst has selected Ruth Limtiaco, Chief Executive Officer of The Limtiaco Company, to receive the award. With more than 30 years of PR experience, including leading her own firm since 1989, Limtiaco has developed numerous public awareness campaigns in both Hawaii and nationally.

University of Hawai‘i - Manoa Senior Chelsea Yamase also received the 2011 PRSA Hawai‘i/Roy Leffingwell Scholarship award of $1,000.
