Getting the Attention of the Elusive Travel Editor: Jim Byers, Toronto Star

04/16/14 Jim Byers will give us in the inside scoop on how best to pitch a travel editor, story ideas that get him every time, and how to provide photography to media that will get your client/company noticed.

Jim spent five years as travel editor at the Toronto Star. It’s not only the largest paid circulation newspaper in Canada, but has the largest travel section in North America, with two sections averaging more than 20 combined pages each week. Jim now writes a freelance column for the Toronto Star’s Travel section every other week, as well as for the nationwide Metro newspaper chain and other publications.

As the Star's travel editor, Jim made choices every day affecting destinations and hotels and attractions in North America and around the world. He knows what it takes to get the attention of an editor distracted by emails, tweets, Instagram updates and phone calls. He knows what photographs get an editor’s attention and which get spiked at first sight. He knows what kind of press releases get read by editors -- and which sink to the bottom of their email in-box.

Jim is very active on social media. He has a regular blog on the Toronto Star’s website and on his own site, jimbyerstravel.com. He has nearly 10,000 followers on Twitter, and you can also find him on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
